Shiva & Shakti = Yin & Yang

Sex is traditionally considered a pleasurable act of uniting male and female bodies together to continue life. I've been researching the sexual relationship between the male and female, and many of the content I found refers to the Kamasutra. When I googled further into the Kamasutra, many results came up with different sex positions and information on how to please a lover. The Hindu portrayal of sex consists of very raw expressions of sexual desire, strictly representing the female and male. Two gods that represent the unity of male and female are Shiva and Shakti: Shakti represents the divine feminine creative energy that is the agent of all change. Shiva is the male god of destruction. According to Hindi mythology, "without Shakti, Shiva is Shava." - which means that without the female energy, the male is impotent or as good as dead.
Shiva = Yin / Seed
Shakti = Yang / Energy (she is the life force that breathes life into the body and brings seeds to fruition)

I plan on representing these two figures in my drawing, or at least keeping them in mind while portraying unity of female and male bodies in an abstract way. The drawing will consist of mostly lines- I will study the relationship between different lines and incorporate them into my drawing to depict the force of fruition. I plan to stick with the large format of my drawing (6ft x 9-10ft) and depict the female and male entities on opposite edges of the paper (left and right) and have them come together in the middle to produce an orb or something that represents a burst of energy. That's the general idea of how I want my piece to look. I am doing sketches right now and probably do sketches through vectors on illustrator to show the class a larger scale of the idea I have.

  1. The blog needs to be much more active, engaged, visual and useful next semester. There isn't much here at all. This is intended as a tool where you can record your progress, something that will encourage you to engage with your studio practice.
